Your business card is often the first tangible representation of your brand. Learn the do's and don'ts of business card etiquette.
Why Business Cards Still Matter
In an increasingly digital world, the humble business card remains a powerful networking tool. A well-designed card conveys professionalism, attention to detail, and respect for the person receiving it.
Design Principles
Keep It Clean
Avoid clutter. Your card should include your name, title, company, phone number, email, and website. Anything else is optional.
Choose Quality Materials
A flimsy card suggests a flimsy business. Invest in quality paper stock and consider special finishes like embossing or spot UV.
Include Social Proof
Adding your company's social media handles or a QR code linking to your LinkedIn profile can be effective.
Etiquette Tips
Always Carry Cards
You never know when you'll meet a potential client or partner. Keep your cards in a dedicated case.
Present with Respect
When offering your card, present it with both hands or with the text facing the recipient. Take a moment to look at the card before putting it away.
Receive Gracefully
When receiving someone else's card, take a moment to read it before storing it. Comment on something you find interesting about their work.
Follow Up
The card is just the beginning. Follow up within 48 hours of your meeting to reinforce the connection.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using outdated information
- Poor print quality
- Overly complicated designs
- Not including a call to action
- Handing out cards indiscriminately
